The Coalition for Human Rights & Democracy in Bangladesh (CHRD Bangladesh) condemns the Russian invasion of Ukraine and fully supports the US sanctions.
With regards to this, the present fascist government in Bangladesh has close Russian connections and is now constructing a 2.4 GWe nuclear power plant at a declared cost of $12.65 billion. It is almost certain that the final cost will be much more than the budget due to corruption. Some analysts say that it may even reach $20 billion. Initially, it was announced by the government of Bangladesh that the cost would be around $4 billion but according to reliable reports, that is untrue.
The Russian Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation is the builder of the project. Russia will also supply nuclear fuel in the plant. Transparency International has already expressed concerns about the safety of this project due to its flood-prone location, which poses serious risks because of the high population density in the area.
The illegitimate regime of Sheikh Hasina has undertaken this project to earn a huge commission and establish a strategic relationship with Russia. It is also alleged that the Sheikh family has transferred billions of dollars earned through corruption to Russia and Belarus.
The US government has already imposed limited sanctions against a few offenders of human rights in Bangladesh. It is our earnest request that the US should impose additional sanctions against the Russian company, Atomic Energy Commission Bangladesh and Sheikh Hasina herself.
The President of Russia Vladimir Putin and the President ot Belarus Alexander Lukashenko are already under US sanctions. It is the firm conviction of CHRD Bangladesh that the unelected Prime Minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina should officially join this notorious club for her extensive corruption which has been a constant concern for the people of Bangladesh for decades.
